Pollinator Action
We are rapidly losing our wild bees, butterflies, moths, hover flies, beetles and wasps. Kent’s flying insect population has dropped by up to 70% in the last 20 years.
To turn the tide, we’re planting wildflowers throughout the parish to improve pollinator habitats and food sources, especially planting summer-flowering species, to prolong the flowering season and provide vital food for longer periods.
We're working with Kent County Council, Ashford Borough Council, and mowing contractors Aspire to create pollinator-friendly mowing regimes across areas including:
High Street greens
Station approach
Chalk Avenue and Appledore Road verges
With support from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and local donors, our volunteers are being trained to identify pollinators and monitor wildflower growth.
A major threat to pollinators is the loss of natural habitats, but we can all play a part in protecting and creating green spaces. Why not create a nectar cafe in your garden with these pollinator-friendly plants?
